Dental Implants Aftercare
Congratulations on completing your dental implant!
At Calm Dental, we want your new dental implants to heal smoothly and last for many years. Proper aftercare is just as important as the procedure itself. Below, you’ll find clear advice on what to expect after surgery, how to look after your mouth during recovery, and the best ways to maintain your implants long term.
What to Expect After Implant Surgery
It is normal to experience some discomfort and changes in the first few days:
Swelling and tenderness around the implant site, usually peaking within 48 hours.
Mild bruising of the gums or skin, which settles within a week.
Small amounts of bleeding or oozing from the site.
Tiredness as your body focuses on healing.
These are part of the natural recovery process. Pain is usually well-managed with standard pain relief, and most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days.

Immediate Aftercare (First Week)
Controlling Bleeding
- Bite gently on gauze if bleeding occurs. Replace as needed.
- Avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully for the first 24 hours.
Reducing Swelling
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 10-minute intervals.
- Sleep with your head slightly raised for the first two nights.
Eating and Drinking
- Stick to soft, cool foods such as yoghurt, smoothies, and soups.
- Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that may irritate the site.
- Keep hydrated but avoid alcohol and smoking, as they slow healing.
Oral Hygiene
- Brush your teeth gently, avoiding the implant site for the first few days.
- After 24 hours, rinse with warm salt water several times a day.
- Use any prescribed mouthwash exactly as instructed.
The Healing Phase (Weeks to Months)
Dental implants fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration, which can take several months. During this period:
Continue careful brushing and flossing around your teeth and gums.
Use interdental brushes recommended by your dentist to clean around the implant.
Attend all review appointments so we can monitor healing.
Avoid smoking, as it increases the risk of implant failure.
Long-Term Care and Maintenance
Once healed, implants need the same care as natural teeth:
Daily brushing and flossing with attention to the gum line.
Regular professional cleaning
Routine check-ups so we can ensure the implant, crown, and surrounding tissues stay healthy.
With the right care, dental implants can last for many years and feel just like your own teeth.

FAQs
Initial healing usually takes 1–2 weeks, but full integration with the bone (osseointegration) can take 3–6 months depending on your individual case.
For the first few days, stick to soft foods and avoid chewing directly on the implant site. Most patients return to a normal diet within a couple of weeks, but it’s best to introduce harder foods gradually.
With proper care, implants can last decades, often for life. The crown (the visible part) may eventually need replacement, but the implant post itself is designed for long-term use.
You may feel some soreness or tenderness for a few days, but this is usually well managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients are surprised at how comfortable the process is.
Smoking, poor oral hygiene, and missing follow-up appointments are the most common risk factors. Following aftercare advice greatly reduces these risks.
