Root Canal Treatment – Pain-Free Endodontics

Save your natural tooth and eliminate pain

When a tooth becomes infected or inflamed deep inside, root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) is often the only way to preserve the tooth and stop the pain. At Calm Dental, we provide gentle, effective, and modern root canal treatment in a relaxed setting, using the latest technology and a calm, supportive approach.

What is a root canal treatment?

A root canal is a procedure used to treat infection at the centre of a tooth (the dental pulp). During the treatment, the infected tissue is carefully removed, the root canals are disinfected, and the space is sealed to prevent further infection. It is often the final step to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

Why might you need a root canal?

You may require root canal treatment if the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected due to:

  • Deep decay reaching the pulp

  • A cracked or broken tooth

  • Trauma to the tooth

  • A failed filling or crown

  • An abscess at the root tip

Symptoms that may indicate the need for root canal therapy include:

  • Persistent toothache or sharp pain, especially when biting

  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold

  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums

  • Discolouration of the tooth

  • A pimple-like bump on the gum

Our approach to pain-free root canal treatment

Our priority is your comfort and long-term oral health. Here’s how we ensure a smooth and stress-free experience:

1. Gentle anaesthesia

We use modern techniques and numbing agents to ensure you feel no discomfort during the procedure.

2. Digital diagnostics

Digital X-ray allow us to locate infection precisely and plan treatment efficiently.

3. Thorough disinfection

We use rotary endodontic tools and antibacterial solutions to clean canals thoroughly.

4. Sealing and protection

Once cleaned, the canals are sealed with biocompatible material and the tooth is restored with a composite filling or crown.

5. Calming environment

You can expect quiet surroundings, music, and a calm, focused team throughout.

What happens during the procedure?

Root canal treatment is typically completed in one or two appointments, depending on the complexity of the tooth.

Step-by-step overview:

  1. Examination, digital X-ray, and diagnosis

  2. Local anaesthetic to numb the area

  3. Access opening made in the tooth

  4. Removal of infected pulp and bacteria

  5. Cleaning and shaping of the canals

  6. Filling and sealing of the root system

  7. Final restoration – a filling or crown to protect the tooth

Most patients report feeling relief, not pain, after the treatment is completed.

FAQs

Does a root canal hurt?

Not anymore. Thanks to modern local anaesthesia techniques and advances in equipment, root canal treatment is now a pain-free procedure for most patients. At Calm Dental, we ensure the tooth and surrounding area are completely numb before beginning. You may feel some pressure or mild vibration during the procedure, but not pain.

Patients who arrive with intense toothache often feel immediate relief once the infection is removed and pressure is released. After treatment, some tenderness may remain for a few days — this is normal and usually responds well to over-the-counter pain relief.

How long does the treatment take?

Root canal treatment typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes per tooth, depending on complexity.

  • Front teeth (incisors and canines) usually have a single root and can often be treated in one visit.

  • Premolars and molars may have two, three, or more canals and may require two appointments for full disinfection and sealing.

We will always explain your treatment plan in advance, including how many visits you may need. Emergency or infected cases may require an initial drainage or dressing visit before the final cleaning and sealing.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

In most cases, especially for back teeth, yes. Once the pulp is removed, the tooth becomes more brittle and is prone to fracture over time, especially under chewing forces. A custom-made crown helps:

  • Protect the tooth from breakage

  • Restore full biting function

  • Seal the tooth from future bacterial leakage

In some cases (typically front teeth or low-load areas), a composite filling may be sufficient. We will always advise the most suitable option for your case based on location, structure, and aesthetic needs.

What happens if I don’t get a root canal?

Delaying or avoiding root canal treatment when recommended can lead to serious complications, including:

  • Spread of infection to the surrounding bone and tissues

  • Formation of a dental abscess, which can be painful and dangerous if untreated

  • Loss of the tooth, potentially requiring extraction and later replacement

  • Possible systemic effects, such as fever or facial swelling

Untreated infections don’t heal on their own — they often worsen. A root canal allows you to keep your natural tooth and prevent the cascade of problems that can follow extraction.

Is the success rate high?

Yes. Modern root canal treatment is highly successful, with long-term survival rates of over 90%.

Can I drive or return to work after the procedure?

Yes, in most cases. Root canal treatment is done under local anaesthetic, so you remain fully conscious. After the numbness wears off (usually within 2–3 hours), you can resume normal activities.

How do I care for my tooth after root canal treatment?

After treatment:

  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has been fully restored (especially if it only has a temporary filling)

  • Brush and floss as usual, keeping the area clean

  • Take any prescribed antibiotics or anti-inflammatories as directed

  • Let us know if you experience swelling, severe pain, or a return of symptoms

Once the final restoration is placed (filling or crown), maintain regular check-ups and hygiene visits to help your tooth last long-term.

Is it better to extract the tooth instead?

Not usually. Saving your natural tooth is nearly always preferable. Extraction may seem simpler, but it can lead to:

  • Shifting of surrounding teeth

  • Bite misalignment

  • Jawbone loss over time

  • Need for a replacement (implant, bridge, or denture), which may be more costly and invasive

Root canal treatment allows you to preserve your tooth’s function and appearance without the need for artificial replacements.
